"The scene recalls Kali’s rampage after the demon wars; Shiva becomes the “shava”—the ground on which Shakti stands—thereby arresting her wrath.
The diorama shows Mahakali in fierce stride, stepping on the supine Shiva across a cremation-ground base strewn with skulls and a serpent. Eight arms wheel out with her arsenal—khadga (chopper), trishula, kapala (skull bowl), ghanta (bell), discus and conch, with other hands poised in command. Wild hair flies, a garland of severed heads swings at her waist, and the outthrust tongue marks the terrible, blood-drinking aspect of the Goddess."
