"This recreation of a wooden masterpiece shows Gopāla Krishna. The blue youth stands in gentle tribhaṅga, playing the flute (venu) as a tender cow nuzzles at his side. He is lavishly garlanded and jeweled, framed by an elaborate makara-torana arch of scrolls, parrots, and lotus motifs, all carved-and-painted to evoke traditional South Indian temple woodwork.
Iconographically, Venu-Gopāla is Krishna as the cowherd of Vrindavan—the flute calling beings to harmony, the cow signifying pastoral care and abundance."
